The benefits of spending time in nature on our immune and mental wellbeing

Nature mental wellbeing

It's possible that a lack of connection with nature is contributing to the rise in the number of mental health disorders we're all dealing with, from depression to anxiety.

What is it about a stroll around the park, a run, or merely gazing out the window that is so restorative and stress-relieving? Stress can get the best of us at times, preventing us from doing our best work or even making the greatest judgments. Experts believe that not getting out of the house and connecting with nature during epidemic times may be contributing to the rise in mental health concerns such as depression and anxiety that we all face.

  IMMUNE POWER

"If you want an easy, soothing strategy to enhance immunity, spend time in green places on a daily basis, if possible, and at least once a week." Dr Frank Lipman, a celebrity doctor and physician from South Africa, tweeted, "Spending time in green spaces is as important as eating your greens."

 IMMUNE POWER

"Too many individuals are isolated from the natural environment, let alone other people." In fact, according to the Harvard School of Public Health, Americans spend only 5% of their time outside, so it's no surprise that so many people feel bored, uninspired, or mildly sad. Dr. Lipman agrees.

"For city dwellers, spending time in nature may be as simple as taking a lunch break on a seat in a botanical garden or relaxing in a park watching puffy clouds—two quick and easy options if time is of the essence. Nature may rejuvenate you without taking a walk in the woods "Dr. Lipman agrees.

There are numerous advantages.

If your mind is overworked and anxious, all it needs is a little rest, which nature can supply in the most natural way possible. When we go outside and stare at the trees, sky, clouds, and birds, our bodies release dopamine, oxytocin, and serotonin, which make us feel better.

"Simply being in nature can help to start a chain reaction of positive impacts. As you drift into a state of soft-focus awareness, the parasympathetic nervous system activates, cortisol levels drop, and the brain pumps the brakes "Dr. Lipman continues.

 IMMUNE POWER

Our connection to nature is instinctive, according to Dr. Sonal Anand, Psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospital, Mumbai, given that humans emerged from nature itself and have only been living in a concrete jungle for a few hundred years or so. Dr. Anand, who calls nature an automatic stress reliever, claims that if we restrict ourselves of sensory inputs, we would lose touch with ourselves.

According to her, being in nature aids our healing in the following ways:

 IMMUNE POWER

Stress reliever: Getting out of the house and spending time in nature generates pleasant hormones and helps to relieve stress.

Improves problem-solving capacity: It broadens our horizons and expands our problem-solving capabilities. It breaks the monotony of the same scenery more than anything else.

Increases immunity: If you stay in your house all day, you aren't exposed to anything. When you go outside, your body is exposed to a variety of substances, and your body generates antibodies to protect you. Our bodies don't get an opportunity to develop these antibodies while we stay at home, which may have an impact on our immunity.
